Nubble Wave with Plovers
While on assignment for Down East in Ogunquit, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to visit Nubble Lighthouse. Arriving just before sunset, a warm glow filled the air, belying the cold and snow. A large group of plovers were sifting the surf the was washing over the rocks. I just love watching these birds, and wondered if I could incorporate them into my image. To get my shutter speed fast enough, I have to bump the ISO to 1600 and open up my aperture to f/8, which gave me the 1/500 of a second I needed to freeze the action. When I saw a wave approaching, I put the camera into burst mode and fired away. The wave impacted the shoreline and sent up a large plume, scaring the birds into the air right in front of me. When I checked the lcd screen right after, I saw that I had gotten the shot. Exciting!
