I was so excited to capture this scene in Acadia National Park this fall. Some of you may have seen John Putnam's image of this same sun halo with a person standing in it. I was there at the same time, in a different location, and decided to run down here because I knew that the monument in Monument Cove would probably line up nicely. It's a bit of a treacherous descent down here, but I was careful and got down fine. There's not a lot of room to back up here right against a cliff, so I used a 12mm lens to get an ultra-wide perspective. Even then, I had to create a panorama by sticking together 5 vertical frames to get this field of view, which encompasses more than 180 degrees. To me, this scene evokes an ancient ritual, and is so befitting the name monument. It's almost as if this pillar was created to worship the sun, which is in full glory with a halo here.
