Hypnagogia is the transitional state from wakefulness to sleep, also defined as the waning state of consciousness during the onset of sleep. Hypnagogia is also regularly employed in a more general sense that covers both falling asleep and waking up. I would describe the experience of seeing the last light of day fade into starlight and the lights of towns and villages below in this way. There's an almost surreal or hallicinatory quality to the light, one we don't often slow down enough to fully appreciate. It's amazing to witness it especially in such a rarified environment, in this case, high up near the summit cone of Mount Chocorua in New Hampshire. The challenge and excitement of winter hiking in these environments has been a bit of an awakening for me, especially creatively. I am driven to search for beauty, and here I'm finding it in intense concentrations.
