Swinging Bridge

The Brunswick Topsham Swinging Bridge was built in 1892, connecting workers living in the Topsham Heights neighborhood with the sprawling Cabot Mill, now known as Fort Andross. It was designed by John A. Roebling, the same man who designed the much more famous Brooklyn Bridge.

I didn't plan on this being a square crop, but after trying it out, I was amazed at how well it worked. The conditions speak for themselves. A perfect dusting of snow created some beautiful texture on the rivets and covered the railings, wires, and turned the opposite shore into a wash of white. In real life, the bridge isn't quite so red, but I wanted to accentuate that a bit in this photo. The symmetry is all real, no warping or tweaking was necessary. Those engineers knew what they were doing!
