There’s a somewhat precarious spot that you can stand on the embankment above Fort Preble, part of old fortifications built between 1808 and 1906, to view this amazing zig-zag formation. I love taking in sunrise here because of the way light hits the side of the fort. You can also take in the beautiful Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse, and out in Casco Bay, Fort Gorges. On most mornings, you’ll also see plenty of boat traffic coming through. I prefer capturing the lobster boats, but I’ve seen everything from oil tankers, to sailboats, to giant cruise liners arriving and departing Portland Harbor here.
